All you need to know about Cervical Collar!

 A cervical collar will help maintain your head in a still position till your recover from neck pain or head injury. Various kinds of cervical collar are available from rigid structure to simple, wrap around collars. Which is the one prescribed for you depend on the cause of your pain or injury?

Cervical collars have existed since ancient Greece and Egypt. They are used to freeze head movement, lower neck pain and enhance healing. Most common use is to heal neck injury sustained in a car crash, called as whiplash. Nearly two-thirds of those injured in car accidents develop pain in the neck.

The reasons why you need a cervical collar:
·         To alleviate pain: The collar helps support the head while allowing soft tissues of your neck to heal.
·         Post surgery: You may need a cervical collar, post spinal neck surgery to maintain neck bones in position while healing takes place.

·         Temporary help: If you have been involved in an accident, a cervical collar may be worn as a measure of precaution till evaluation of injuries to your neck takes place.
·         Sports: In high risk sports like ice-skating, go-carting, motor racing, etc., cervical collars may be worn as protective measures to prevent whiplash and other injuries.

Wear and Care
If doctor suggests use of cervical collar, you may be given all or some of the following instructions:
·         The neck brace must fit snugly so that you cannot move your head and also your chin should not stick out of the collar.

·         Only padded portion of the collar should touch the body.
·         In case, you have long hair or beard, hair should be kept outside the brace.
·         Keep your skin dry and clean below the brace.
·         Avoid lotions and creams as they will damage the pads.
·         Identify any regions of skin-irritation when the collar is removed for cleaning.
·         Mild soap can be used to clean the pads daily. Avoid abrasives and harsh detergents.
