What is Panch Karma?

Panchkarma is the ultimate in mind- body experience. It cleanses or detoxifies the body, restores well being and toughens the immune system. It is one of the most effective therapies in Ayurvedic system of medicine.
Panchkarma is recommended when one falls ill or is feeling out of balance or as a seasonal process of rejuvenation. In Sanskrit, Panch Karma means- “Five Treatments.” It is aimed at mainly detoxifying the bodyof toxins left by poor nutrition or disease using Ayurveda Panchakarma equipments.

The five therapeutic treatments to cleanse and restore the body and mind are: Nasya, Virechana, Vamana, Raktamokshana and Basti. These five therapies remove toxins in the body because of illness and stress.
The Ayurvedic doctor makes a diagnosis of your body before beginning Panchkarma and recommends the type of Panchkarma treatment suited to you.

Vamana

It is a special therapy targeting Kapha toxins collected in the respiratory tract or the body. The doctor will recommend this to patients with high imbalance of Kaphas. This therapy helps alleviate allergies, bronchial asthma, hay fever, nasal congestion, etc

Virechana (Purgation):

It is a purgation therapy that is medicated, which eliminates Pitta toxins from the body. These toxins may have collected in the gall bladder and liver. This therapy leads to complete cleansing of gastro-intestinal tract. It helps heal asthma, chronic fever, diabetes, skin disorders, constipation, etc.

Basti (Colonic Irrigation):

This therapy consists of enema and is the most important among all Panchkarma treatments. It cleanses the body from all three toxins: Kapha, Pitta and Vata by cleansing the colon. It is a highly recommended treatment for rejuvenation. An enema made of medicated oil or ghee along with an herbal decoction is administered to cleanse the colon. It may be given for many days, depending on the patient. It helps in healing everything from Colitis to constipation to infertility.
·
   NASYA  (nose cleaning):

Medicated oil is given through the nose to remove Kapha toxins from neck and head region. It helps alleviate respiratory problems, insomnia, headaches, etc.

   Raktamokshana

It is a therapy to cleanse the blood and is recommended very rarely in Panchakarma. It carries great risk of blood infections.
This is, in sum, what constitutes Ayurvedic Panchkarma treatement.
